No Roll Sugar Cookies

These no roll sugar cookies are soft, buttery and are great for both everyday and holiday occasions. They are named no roll since there is no rolling out and cutting of the dough required. These classic sugar cookies are technically a molded or shaped cookie. Molded and shaped cookies are cookies that are usually shaped or molded by hand, or can be scooped with a cookie scoop and then rolled into uniform circles using the hand before baking. They are described in the 1971 version of a Farm Journal Cookie Cookbook as charming cookies, coming in many sizes and shapes, are not difficult to make nor unduly time consuming. See tips below on how to make these classic cookies!

About this Recipe

As mentioned earlier, there is no chilling, rolling out or using cookie cutters for this sugar cookie recipe. This recipe originally is from my Great Grandma’s recipe file and are great to make for everyday or holiday occasions since you can roll the cookie dough balls in colored sanding sugars for different holidays.

This recipe calls for ingredients you probably already have in your pantry: butter and sugar is mixed until light and fluffy and then powdered sugar and vegetable oil are added in. Next, eggs and vanilla extract are mixed in followed by the dry ingredients of all purpose flour, baking powder and salt.

The cookie dough is then scooped using a small cookie scoop and rolled between the hands to form a uniform ball of dough. The dough is then rolled in either granulated or colored sanding sugars, placed on baking sheets and then each ball of dough is pressed down using the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar before baked. * To make a quicker version of this, you can simply just scoop the dough with a cookie scoop and press down with a glass dipped in sugar once it is on the baking sheet.

This recipe makes a very large batch – 6 dozen! These cookies freeze really well, see tips below on storage.
